Byron Kosuge’s Notes

The grapes were picked on Sept 3 and Sept 5 2016. It’s a mixture of 2/3 Hyde selection Wente and 1/3 Mt Eden selection. We pick, both for BK Wines and Small Vines on the early side for Chardonnay, usually 21.5 to 22 brix.

It started out fermentation in one of my concrete eggs before being moved into neutral oak in the winter time to finish aging. The TBH vineyard (stands for Barlow Homestead; the Barlow folks would not let us use the name) is located at the winery where you can visit, just northwest of the town of Sebastopol.

It is on Goldridge soil and the vines are planted on close spacing, 3 x 4 feet, cane pruned and farmed organically (although not certified organic). Brandon Farrell’s Notes

The normal Byron Kosuge Chardonnay is a blend of two vineyards including the TBH but this cuvee is 100% from the TBH vineyard. It is a more lean and focused wine than the typical Chardonnay blend.

The first time I tasted it I was in love. It is perfectly integrated with a tension not found in most California Chardonnays. It is a pleasure to work with Byron, as he is one of the great winemakers of California and his understanding of making wines that reflect California is a true accomplishment.
