Brandon Farrellโ€™s Notes

Bob Lindquist the โ€œRhone Rangerโ€ of California should be credited with introducing world class Syrah to the USA market. Bob along with his partner in crime the late Jim Clenden have operated at the legendary ABC winery on Bien Nacido for over 25 years year. They have very quietly been producing what I would argue is one of the greatest examples of Burgundy & Rhone varietals ever from the USA. I have been lucky enough to taste Bob and Jimโ€™s wines multiple times dating back to the early 90s at the Estate over lunches. Incredible, world class wines that will rival the great domaines of Burgundy or Northern Rhone.

When the opportunity to work with Bob on a Syrah I was thrilled! The โ€œCuveeโ€ I finally decided to bottle with Bob really isn't a cuvee, the wine can not be any simpler. Neutral Barrique, one vineyard, and one grape! The Syrah is 100% from the cool Reeves Vineyard in Edna Valley up off the Valley floor. This produced a much restrained version of Syrah showing the lovely white pepper notes and pure Syrah fruit characteristics. The grapes were 100% destemmed as Bob felt the stems were not mature enough to add to the wine. Once the wine was near maturity in barrel, we did a host of blends adding Cabs, Grenache, Mourvedre, and a few others grapes. Everytime we blended both Bob and I agreed we couldnโ€™t justify taking away from the stunning Syrah fruit qualities that had developed in cask! So we bottled the Syrah solo and I am very excited to show this wine! With some air it is an incredible example of cool climate Syrah from the USA with old world charm.
